DENIS J1048−3956 হলো একটি অত্যন্ত ছোট, অনুজ্জ্বল আল্ট্রা-কুল রেড ডোয়ার্ফ নক্ষত্র, যা পৃথিবী থেকে 13.2 ly দূরত্বে দক্ষিণ গোলার্ধের অ্যান্টলিয়া নক্ষত্রমণ্ডলীতে অবস্থিত এবং এটি পৃথিবীর নিকটতম নক্ষত্রগুলোর অন্যতম। এই নক্ষত্রটি অত্যন্ত অনুজ্জ্বল, যার আপাত মান (apparent magnitude) প্রায় ১৭,[6] এবং একে দেখার জন্য ক্যামেরা যুক্ত টেলিস্কোপের প্রয়োজন হয়। এটি ২০০০ সালে জেভিয়ার ডেলফোস (ইনস্টিটিউট অফ অ্যাস্ট্রোফিজিক্স অফ দ্য ক্যানারি আইল্যান্ডস, বর্তমানে অবজারভেটোয়ার ডি গ্রেনোবল) এবং থিয়েরি ফরভেইল (কানাডা-ফ্রান্স-হাওয়াই টেলিস্কোপ কর্পোরেশন) কর্তৃক আরও নয়জন জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানীর সহায়তায় আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছিল।[7]
গতিবিদ্যার দিক থেকে, DENIS J1048−3956 তরুণ পাতলা চাকতির (young thin disc) অন্তর্ভুক্ত।[8] ২০০৫ সালে রেডিও জ্যোতির্বিজ্ঞানের মাধ্যমে এই বস্তু থেকে একটি শক্তিশালী ফ্লেয়ার শনাক্ত করা হয়েছিল।[9]
